A Study on Activities of Nurse Aides in Primary Care Center

Abstract
An activity study on nurse aides engaged in a rural demonstration health care project was conducted during the month of July 1976 lasting 10 days.
The purpose of study was to determine the specific areas of nursing activities performed and level of skill applied in terms of time spent.
The study population comprised of 6 nurse aides (N.A.) and 6 nurse aide trainees (N.A.T.) and direct observation was made to each worker for 5 days or 2.700 minutes, totaling 32,400 men-minutes or 540 men-hours.
The followings are the summary of findings.
A. Activities of nurse aides and nurse aide trainees by level of skill.
1) Of the total daily activity time, the preventive and curative activities were revealed to be major activity.
N.A. Appeared to spend less proportion of activity time (24.8%) than N.A.T. (28.1%) of these activities performed as N.A. and N.A.T. respectively spent 53.1% and 61.8% for health teaching and counseling leaving very small proportions for curative functions.
2) For the skill levels of clerical activity (15.5%), administrative actibity(8.9%) and housekeeping, the proportions of daily time allocated were within the range of 6% to 15.5% in general.
3) For unclassified activities, N.A. and N.A.T. allocated 18.5% and 15.6% respectively for this purpose.
The major area of unclassified activities was spent on personal purpose.
B. Activities of nurse aide trainees by area of nursing activities.
1) Of the area of activity performed, the individual and family-centered activities were found to be major area as N.A. spent 25.2% and 29.6% for this purpose. The major contents of individual and family-centered activities performed were health teaching and counseling.
2) For the clinic-centered activities, N.A. and N.A.T, respectively spent 19.6% and 22.0%.
3) The personnel-centered activities, N.A. was found to spend slightly more time (10.2%) than N.A.T. (8%).
4) Other-centered activities, N.A. appeared to spend more proportion of activity time (18.1%) than N.A.T. (12.6%).
C. Travel time and outreached activity of the daily activity time, 26.1% was spent on travel 40% for outreached activity.
In summerizing, both groups, N.A. and N.A.T. were found to allocate major activity time in preventive and curative or individual and family-centered as they spent 26.5% or more time for this area or skill level. The nurse aide trainees seemed to be more active in all activities in terms of time allocation.
Activities performing by level of nurse aide seemed to be influenced by delegated responsibilities, and supervision. Although qualitative statement cannot be made as the contents and standard of care provided by sample population were not explored, basic education and duration of nurse aide training can be readjusted on the basis of the findings in this study.
